Many individuals will want to obtain their mental health services
through their health insurance programs and many programs offer
this coverage. If you want to know how much your insurance company
is willing to cover for mental health and substance abuse services,
you should call the customer service phone number on the back of
your insurance card.
Here are some questions you may want to ask
your insurance company to make your heath care decisions:
- What percentage
of each visit is covered by my insurance? What is my co-payment
per session?
- What is
the standard or "contract" rate allowable for
a single therapy session (often referred to as procedure
code 90806)
- Do I have a deductible I must meet before my benefits begin?
- How many
sessions per year are covered by my insurance?
- Which
services are covered? Individual therapy? Couples' therapy?
Family Therapy?
Some people
elect not to use their heath care plans to cover of mental health
services, and chose to pay for these independently.
This is usually based concerns about the privacy
of their protected
health information and who this information
may be shared with in the future through insurance companies
and
their affiliates.
This is a personal choice each individual needs to
make based on his/her current situation. Those with
insurance should be able
to use it to pay for psychotherapy and it is also
understandable that some individuals may choose to
control their medical and mental
health information. If you choose not to use your
health insurance to cover services, your personal
information and medical records
will remain confidential, with no access granted
to your insurance company or their affiliates.
